what is a "carputer"?

to put it quite simply:

car + computer = carputer.

imagine having all the features of your home PC... in your car!!! organize and centralize your entire music collection. watch DVD movies from media or your hard drive. use GPS navigation to find your way. integrate your cell phone using Bluetooth technology. perform diagnostic checks by connecting to your vehicle's computer. the list of features goes on and on—FM radio, satellite radio, internet, email, etc...

why install a carputer?

stereos capable of playing mp3 cd's, iPods, factory and aftermarket GPS units—these are all viable and easy solutions to get what you want out of your car. but why not simplify everything into one component? the use of a carputer gives you the flexibility to choose the features you want (with the ability to remove, add, or upgrade at any time) and have them integrated into a single system. as a result, you get a very cost-effective product with multiple capabilities. just as a comparison, the average factory add-on GPS system costs approximately $2000. for the same price (or, more than often, less), you can have GPS, as well as music, movies, etc.

can i install a carputer myself?

absolutely!!! there are many resources on the internet that should be more than helpful in accomplishing your project. check out the links section for info. personally, i've never taken on anything quite like this before. but after lots of reading and research, i felt more than comfortable in getting the job done. just be sure to read, read, READ, and take your time.
